Watches in Depth - The Chronograph
2011 July 15
One of the most popular complications in watchmaking is the chronograph, the watch that doubles as a stopwatch as well as a timekeeper. It’s been one of the most prolific complication in the 20th century, second only to the basic calendar complication, and are accessible from entry-level Swiss brands all the way up to the top of the watchmaker’s craft. The chronograph has a long history in fine watchmaking, and has long been a symbol of mechanical prowess combined with everyday functionality. After having become so popular and commonplace, many people overlook just how complicated a fine chronograph mechanism really is.

This Baily Blog entry recapitulates U-Boat's past five years as seen from within the Matt Baily boutique.
Simple Does Not Mean Unremarkable - The Marvin Watch Co presents M108 Origin
2010 July 02
Marvin Watch Co° may strike many in North America as a new brand, but in reality it has a very long and eventful history. Many of their vintage creations, from as far back as the early Twentieth century, are still ticking today on the wrists of collectors or at the Marvin castle in Neuchatel, Switzerland. When it became official that Matt Baily would be an authorized retailer for this fine brand, we posted an article presenting Marvin Watch Co° on the Baily Blog. The company takes great pride in their history and many Marvin watches are created to reflect this heritage. The Marvin M108, dubbed the Origin, is a perfect example of this. It captures subtle hints of vintage elegance and mixes them within a contemporary package.
Nicholas G. Hayek, Champion of the Swiss Watch Industry and Founder of Swatch Dies
2010 June 29
Nicholas G. Hayek was often referred to as the man who saved the Swiss watch industry. By consolidating some of the most important brands and founding Swatch to marry mass production with Swiss quality manufacturing he thwarted the negative effects that the advent of inexpensive, Japanese quartz watches were having on the Swiss manufacturers. Mr. Hayek was 82 on June 28th, when he died suddenly. His larger-than-life personality and hands-on business attitude will surely be missed by his colleagues.
Zenith El-Primero Duo - Reviews of Two Luxurious Watches
2010 June 28
In the world of watchmaking, there are a select few movements that become legendary in themselves. These movements can become examples of the heights of the watchmaking tradition, or perhaps simply an example of good rugged engineering. The Zenith El Primero has become one of those movements - for its quality, innovation, and its rugged design - a rare example of when a movement becomes more famous than the watch it came in. Here at Matt Baily we have two excellent examples of the El Primero's versatility - a diamond-adorned ladies open-heart model with power reserve indicator, and an elegant but delightfully complicated men's model with triple-date, moonphase, and chronograph functions.

Video Review of New Bell & Ross BR 03-92 and BR 03 94 Heritage
2010 June 23
Bell & Ross created a very strong buzz at Baselworld 2010 in March thanks to the multitude of great, new watches that they released. Amongst these are two BR 03, 42mm square Instruments based on the Heritage style that was introduced the year before. I wrote about the BR 03 Heritage models in a previous post on the Baily Blog, so I will not go into details here. A simple three-hand and a chronograph version are offered. Both are showcased in the video below.
Video Review of New Alpina Extreme Diver w/ Colour Dials
2010 June 17
What makes a watch successful? Sometimes it is advertising, sometimes it is the brand name, but sometimes it is because the watch is a great timepiece and offers great value. The Alpina Extreme Diver models have made many watch buyers very happy since their release a little over a year ago. Despite being amongst the most expensive, non-manufacture models in the collection, you are getting a lot of quality and style for the money. Early in 2010 several new variations have been added in the collection. I was invited to play with them at Alpina headquarters in Geneva, where I shot a video review for MattBaily.ca.
Video Review of New Alpina Club Automatic
2010 June 16
The Club Automatic is the first of the watches to be presented. I introduced the Club Collections in a previous post on the Baily Blog. It essentially represents Alpina's take on elegant styles. It does not veer too far away from the company's distinctive character and the watches are far from plain or traditional. In the following video you will see three versions of the three-hand Club Automatic and how it looks on the wrist. Make sure you watch it in 1080p HD to enjoy these fine pieces in all detail.
Video Review of Hamilton JazzMaster Medium 34 Automatic
2010 June 14
Now that Hamilton watches are established in the high grade, entry price level, automatic watch category, the company is committed to offering the same value to women. To start, Hamilton has released several beautiful, automatic-winding, mid-sized watches this year. The JazzMaster Medium 34 is the most elegant model of the bunch. It displays an understated, clean style.
Video Review of New Hamilton Jazzmaster Slim Small Seconds
2010 June 12
It would be pretty safe to say that all watches look better in real life than in pictures. The Jazzmaster Slim 43mm is as good an example as you can ask for. It also embodies what we are trying to achieve with the product videos on MattBaily.ca. In photographs, the Slim Small Seconds seems classic and simple, and that ends there. The dial is understated and the case is but a round fitted with a leather strap. This all changes once you have the piece in your hands. The more time is spent with the Slim 43mm the more one appreciates its elegant balanced design and incredible value.
Video Review of New Hamilton Seaview Medium Automatic Watches
2010 June 11
During my visit to the headquarters of Hamilton Watches, there were several new models that really impressed me. Two amongst these are for women. The RailRoad 38mm, which I will be posting a video of as we get closer to its release date, was one. The other was the Jazzmaster Seaview Medium that I will be presenting on this Baily Blog post.
Hamilton Khaki Pilot 46mm Automatic Video Review
2010 June 10
Hamilton watches have a lot of history making watches for the military and specifically for pilots, so the release of the Khaki Pilot was not a huge surprise. There are certain styles that have become so classic and so embedded in our perception of what a watch should look like, that it is hard for companies to ignore them. The "Big Pilot" is one of these styles. Hamilton has taken this style and infused many of their trademark features into it, notably great value, and a clean design that bridges the gap between vintage and new, and between sporty and elegant.
MattBaily.ca Visits Hamilton Headquarters in Biel/Bienne
2010 June 10
Not surprisingly, Switzerland is full of legendary watch places. Geneva houses many of the best known brands, La Chaux-de-Fonds is home to several others including the the Musée International d'Horlogerie, Vallée de Joux is an other municipality with important manufactures. Biel/Bienne, a city peppered with huge names such as Rolex and Omega, is where I was off to for a visit to the Hamilton headquarters and get a closer look at their new watches for 2010.

Review of Three Rolex Submariners
2010 June 02
In today's review I'll be showcasing not one, not two, but three Rolex Submariner Dates that we have in stock. This hat trick is perfect because we have a cross section of the line - the stainless steel, the steel and gold (two tone), and the solid gold models. So enjoy my extended presentation of the Rolex Sub trio. - JC
Factory Tour of Alpina and Frédérique Constant in Geneva
2010 May 21
Being invited to visit Frédérique Constant and Alpina' headquarters in Geneva, I packed my G11 and HD camcorder and made my way to Plan-les-Ouates. This neighbourhood, as I found out, is home to some of the most prestigious watch companies in the world. Since I had never visited this area before, I opted for the roughly thirty minute walk from the train station to discover it. On the way I encountered manufacturing facilities for Rolex, Patek Philippe, and several other watchmaking giants.
A Plunge Into the World of Diver's Watches
2010 May 19
Having written recently about the U-Boat U-1001/1, I took a brief plunge into the world of diving watches and what they offer. There are very specific requirements for a watch to be considered a diving watch. While these features are outlined in detail by international standards, the most important ones can be summarized by considering what is essential to underwater timepieces. They must function when submerged and under great pressure and allow the wearer to easily and quickly measure the elapsed time at different crucial instances during the dive.
Bell & Ross BR 03 Heritage Watches
2010 May 18
Bell & Ross was one of the most talked about brands at Baselworld 2010. This is thanks to some fantastic and defining novelties such as the BR 03-92 military Ceramic and an entire new collection of vintage-inspired timepieces. Because of this, some of the BR 03 novelties were somewhat overshadowed, but for Bell & Ross fans like us their release was very exciting. The BR 03 Heritage models are amongst these low-flying novelties. They depict the style of the larger BR 01 Heritage that enjoyed much success over the past six months. A three-hand and chronograph version, previously unavailable in the larger BR 01 size, were presented.
Frédérique Constant Healey Chrono-Automatic and Stoptimer
2010 May 14
The beauty of vintage Austin-Healey cars is hard to deny. Soft, round curves, glossy chrome accents, hand stitched leather interiors are all appealing features. Frédérique Constant is one of the watch manufacturers that relate to this classic design. Teaming up with Healey collector clubs around the world, FC became the official timing partner for many themed races including the most recent 2010 Healey Challenge in the UK. What better way for a watch company to celebrate such a partnership than with the release of a limited edition timepiece? Alas the Frédérique Constant Healy Chrono Automatic.
Alpina Presents the Club Collection - Part of Their Nightlife Watches
2010 May 14
Since we started carrying Alpina Watches at Matt Baily, the brand has offered decisively sporty watches. The Extreme Avalanche models, for instance, are not only rugged and water resistant, but look the part of luxury sport watches with their robust bezels and rubber straps. The company slogan, "Be a Player," is personified by Alpina's ambassadors, who are important players in their fields varying from sports car racing to slalom skiing. The new Club collections, released at the last Baselworld fair by Alpina, honour a different type of player. The Club watches are dedicated to urban players, presenting more elegant face and case without sacrificing the sporty DNA that Alpina has become known for.

The Khaki Team Earth collection, based on a classic aviator style is meant to raise awareness for Conservation International, an organization who strives to empower communities to protect biodiversity and the environment.
U-1001/1 Video Review from the U-Boat Booth at Baselworld 2010
2010 May 06
As part of our series of videos taken at the U-Boat booth at Baselworld 2010 Matt Baily presents the U-Boat U-1001/1. This 55mm, titanium, Italo Fontana creation is robust. These pieces are equipped with structural strength suited for professional, deep sea dives, but demarcated with signature U-Boat style rather than technical graduations and markings.
Michele Watches Offers Great Mother's Day Gift Ideas
2010 May 05
When speaking of Mother's Day, Michele comes to mind. This is because this is the brand at Matt Baily that most often crosses generational lines. As many Michele watches were purchased by parents for their daughters is as many that have been chosen by men and women as gifts for their mothers.
New Hamilton Watches at Baselworld 2010 - Retro and Authentic
2010 April 26
"An American Brand." Hamilton's moniker is derived from their origin as an important watch manufacturer in the United States, but also stipulates the look and feel of their timepieces. A classic, retro design is common amongst Hamilton watches and reflects the company's strength in the fifties and sixties, when Hamilton was a household name. Highlighting this distinct personality over the past few years has helped the brand return to notoriety, but this time all over the world. At Baselworld 2010, the new models that were displayed at the Hamilton booth varied considerably in style. Some round, some asymmetrical, some even digital. All, however, portray an authentic and clear connection to some aspect of the brand's storied past.
Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Military Ceramic
2010 April 16
In the past few years Bell & Ross has been testing the waters with several watches made of or with ceramic. The BR-03 White Ceramic and BR-S Ceramic models are examples that pleased many watch buyers. These buyers are in search of the quality of high-end watches adorned with the unique esthetic characteristics of ceramic. At the Baselworld 2010 fair in Switzerland, a new Bell & Ross ceramic watch was released that takes advantage of this hot substance in ways that are more suited to the company's design philosophy. The Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Military Ceramic showcases the material's technical qualities alongside its esthetic qualities.
MattBaily.ca Presents Video Presentation of New Alpina Limited Edition Watch
2010 April 15
The 12 Hours of Sebring GMT Chronograph was released this year by Alpina watches at the Baselworld 2010 fair. Its striking, luxurious, and sleek style has attracted quite a bit of attention. You can read the article I wrote about this watch on the Baily Blog titled "Alpina Official Timekeeper 12 Hours of Sebring 2010 Limited Edition." I liked the Sebring GMT Chrono when I saw it on pictures, but once I actually got to play with it at the show I fell in love with it. Its only downside is that Alpina will only manufacture 158 of them, but I guess that this is good for those who manage to get one!
U-Boat Limited Edition Classico Titanium Video
2010 April 07
As I mentioned already on several occasions, Italo Fontana did not disappoint this year at Baselworld. Several very exciting U-Boat watches models where revealed. Amongst them were three new versions of the Classico Titanium Chronograph, which was released last year in a limited series of 200. These 53mm wide, 17mm thick, titanium marvels are equipped with ceramic bezels and fantastic race-car-dashboard-like dials. Each variation will also be limited to only 200 pieces.
Interview with Matthias Breschan - President of Hamilton International
2010 April 06
It is undeniable that the leader in mechanical watchmaking is Switzerland. Very few other countries - namely Germany and Japan - are even on the map as manufacturers of quality movements. It is therefore the obvious choice for the Swatch Group to set up the Hamilton manufacturing operations in Switzerland. This question did bring to mind a blog entry I posted on the Baily Blog that discusses Canadian watchmaking, where I mention that it would be great to see manufactures establish themselves in Canada.
Bell & Ross BR Vintage 126 Heritage Preview
2010 March 30
As mentioned on the Matt Baily Facebook fan page, we were "floored" at Baselworld 2010 by the Bell & Ross' novelties. We were not able to get footage or pictures of these spectacular models, but fortunately Bell & Ross are quite active online and several videos regarding their new models have been posted on their website. The major news is the introduction of an entire new collection of beautiful watches dubbed the BR Vintage collection. This year's ambassadors of this collection are the BR V123 and V126 Heritage.
U-Boat Limited Edition 53mm U-42 Unveiled at Baselworld
2010 March 24
My recent blog entry about the U-Boat U-42 left much to be desired. The brand's publicists released a pre-Basel sneak peak of the back of the watch, giving me very little to report on. Finally, I was introduced to the whole U-42 at the impressive U-Boat booth in the prestigious Hall 1 of the Baselworld Fair.
Matt Baily at Baselworld 2010 - March 18 to 25
2010 March 15
You may have noticed that the Baily Blog has suffered a slight decrease in posts about new watches in the past little while. This is likely due to our watch companies keeping many of their new surprises under wraps; saving them for the end of the week to be released at the the world's largest watch and jewelry exhibition. Starting this Thursday, however, the Baily Blog will be showcasing many new products, as Matt and Marco will be at the show taking pictures and videos, and interviewing industry experts about the watchmaking year to come.
U-Boat U-42 to be Unveiled at Baselworld 2010
2010 March 12
During the past few weeks, U-Boat has been hinting at the release of a new limited edition model to at this year's Baselworld fair. It would be great to have all the details, but I guess we will have to wait to see the watch at the show one week from now. Matt and I will be in Basel where we will be able to get the full scoop on the new U-Boat watches.
Hamilton Khaki X-Landing - The Next Generation of Hamilton X-Watches
2010 March 05
The Hamilton Khaki X-series of watches have offered an array of sporty, sizable watches with functional bezel systems and well-worked, impressive straps. The popular watch-geek destination www.timezone.com has reported a new addition to the Khaki X-watches that we should be introduced to in a few weeks by Hamilton themselves - the limited edition Khaki X-Landing.
Michele Watches Limited and Special Collections
2010 March 03
Variety is the spice of life. Michele watches have embraced this proverb with great enthusiasm! Their watch bands - for example - draw from a palette of hundred of colors and dozens of materials. On the straps, a specialized mechanism allows the owner to swap them easily using only their fingers making it possible to vary the style of your watch as often as you change your outfit. The watches themselves are quite diverse even though each one captures the signature Michele style. For a limited time, Michele will offer an even bigger selection of glamorous and exciting watches in their limited and special collections.
The Three Bell & Ross Square BR Instrument Watches
2010 February 26
Bell & Ross has always moved forward as a company, but it has done so in small(ish), cautious steps. This has been a key to their success and contrasts other companies like Frank Muller for instance, who's quick growth troubled them and saw thousands of their watches sold "dumped" on the grey market. The BR Instrument was an primary player in Bell & Ross' climb to fame. When it first came out it was embraced by watch lovers despite its squareness, size, and ultra-sporty, military styling. Once the watch's acceptance was evident, Bell & Ross branched into other versions of the Instrument including the smaller BR-03. Some successful experimentation with the ceramic and the BR-03 92 frame, eventually led to the creation of the BR-S ceramics. The trifecta was complete. These three different Instruments cover all the bases in terms of satisfying fans of the square Bell & Ross watches.
Frédérique Constant Junior - Why Wait to Give Him His First Luxury Watch
2010 February 24
It is natural for fathers to want the best for their sons. When it comes to watches, a high-quality Swiss timepiece has often been too expensive to justify as a gift for a young man, even though many companies offer specifically suitable models. Traditionally, mid-size watches, which are smaller then the full, man sizes yet still considerably larger then woman's, have served the young market segment. But often these mid-size models are as expensive as their full-size counterparts. This probably explains why most young people's first high-end watch is handed down from their parents. If you are not quite ready to hand over your luxury watch however, Frédérique Constant revealed a new watch that targets young watch lovers and is priced accordingly to their tumultuous and dynamic lifestyles. A Frédérique Constant Junior is a good introduction to luxury watches for any young watch lover and, thanks to high quality Swiss manufacturing, will last for future generations as well.
All-Black Watch Models of 2009 or Lets Not Tell Time Part II
2010 February 06
All-Black Watch Models of 2009 or Lets Not Tell Time Part II Nearing the end of 2008, we posted a blog entry named Let's Not Tell Time!, where Dino discussed several all-black timepieces of that time. Here we present a few of the more notable all-black watches from 2009.
Alpina Official Timekeeper 12 Hours of Sebring 2010 Limited Edition
2010 February 02
Now in its second year of collaboration with the exciting endurance race, Alpina is celebrating this year's event with a new, limited edition, chronograph watch. The Official Timekeeper 12 Hours of Sebring 2010 commemorates the 58th anniversary of the race, which attracts over 150 000 spectators every year and kicks off the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) season. The decisively sporty allure of this new limited edition of 158 pieces will appeal to motor-racing fans thanks to its themed styling and specifically selected features.
A Review of SIHH 2010 - Several Watches That Stood Out
2010 January 28
Although none of the companies that Matt Baily Watches carries are represented at the private Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva, our passion for fine watches runs deep. Furthermore, chances are good that some of the models I will be mentioning in this post will eventually end up in our outstanding collection of certified pre-owned watches, which includes desirable pieces by Panerai, Audemars Piguet, Cartier, and more.
Hamilton X-Mach - A Modern Tribute to Aviation and Speed
2010 January 26
What kind of "American Brand" would Hamilton be if it did not obsess with aeroplanes and speed? The company has an entire family of watches that are dedicated to flight, containing some popular models like the X-Wind and X-Copter. The newest addition to the Aviation family of watches is the X-Mach; able to calculate your Mach number (how fast you are going relevant to the speed of sound). I would love to hear stories of individuals putting this function to the test in real life while I will be content to measure what Mach number I am able to reach on my flight simulator.
A History of Bell & Ross at Matt Baily
2010 January 06
In 2004, Bell & Ross was a sleeping giant. Matt Baily caught on early to their potential, and joined their retailer network in time to witness one of the greatest success stories of the modern watch industry. Now recognizable all over the country, it wasn't so when Matt Baily Marchand de Montres et Bijoux became the first Canadian dealer of Bell & Ross in 2004. The Montreal boutique remained the sole retailer to sell the watches in Canada until the introduction of the BR Instruments exploded their popularity in later years. As an employee of Matt Baily, I witnessed the company"s transformation watch by watch.
Top 5 List of Watches that Changed the Way We Look at Luxury Timepieces
2009 November 16
For over five years, Matt Baily has set itself apart from other watch stores in Montreal by bringing in exciting, new, up-and-coming brands. When looking at a possible new brand to carry, quality is the first prerequisite and is followed by value and potential. This is how we took up dealership of brands like Bell & Ross and U-Boat for which we were the first dealers in Canada. With this list, we highlight five watches from our collections that have swayed trends and turned the most heads.
The BR 01 94 Pro Titanium: A Symbol of Bell & Ross' Philosophy
2009 October 01
Bell & Ross has always manufactured watches to be fit for professional use. To assure this its designers and engineers adhere to four guiding principles. These are water resistance, precision, readability (legibility at a glance), and performance. The help of military, safety, and health professionals is often enlisted to ensure that these aspects are incorporated in each watch. The BR-01 94 Pro Titanium is a symbol of the French manufacturer's four guiding principles.
Oprah Winfrey Wearing a Hamilton Navy GMT
2009 September 21
In the October Issue of O Magazine, Oprah Winfrey sports a Hamilton Khaky Navy GMT. The model that she wears is The gold-tone version with the white dial and white rubber strap. According to Hamilton, the talk-show legend chose the watch to wear during the cover shoot, but loved it so much that she decided to buy it after the shoot. She is seen wearing it throughout the issue along side (amongst others) Jay-Z, who is as always wearing an Audemars Piguet.
Very Limited U-Boat U-1942
2009 August 17
U-Boat watches having enjoyed some success in the past year, are showing it with the introduction of an extremely limited super-watch that is sure to turn heads. The U-1942 will be the largest watch available on the market with a diameter of 65mm and a production of only twenty-nine pieces.
New Bell & Ross Complicated Watches
2009 July 30
Bell & Ross' release of the BR-01 Tourbillon was very successful and has stemmed into the release of several other complicated models. Three new variations of the BR01 Tourbillon are now available as is the most complicated watch of the manufacturer's line, the BR Grand Minuteur.
Review of New U-Boat Straps
2009 July 28
The most recent U-Boat watches to arrive at Matt Baily were fitted with the new version of the Classico Straps. Many aspects of the straps have improved. The most important improvement is the construction of the strap. The leather used for the body is still very thick, but it is a lot softer and supple then its predecessor. This means that the straps of a new watch will take a lot less 'breaking in' then before.
Marco is in Switzerland
2009 July 20
My First visit to Geneva Geneva is not a a very big city, but is packed with things to see. If you are a watch enthusiast, then the points of interest are endless. Since I am neither a good organizer nor an early riser, I did not plan any specific route. We parked the car and walked around for the entire day stopping in a few places for lunch, coffee, and drinks.
Alexandre Despatie with his U-Boat Classico 53mm Watch
2009 June 02
The multi-talented, home-town hero Alexandre Despatie was spotted by one of my clients wearing a 53mm, beige U-Boat Classico. Alexandre was speaking at a recent public appearance when my client noticed the bold, oversize design that U-Boat watches are known for. I find it even more fitting that I'm writing an entry about the world champion and Olympic medalist, as his twenty-fourth birthday on the eighth of June quickly approaches.
Beware of Fake U-Boat Watches on Craigslist
2009 May 11
For every luxury product, there are fakes and replicas, so I guess it was only a matter of time before the counterfeiters turned their attention to the popular U-Boat watches. One particular vendor situated in Montreal uses a link to MattBaily.ca to promote his products on Craigslist. The watches that he shows are replicas of the Flightdeck MSG and MSB with different colour combinations. The watches display what looks like a Unitas manual winding movement, but some have the word 'AUTOMATICO' etched into the back of the case. Some models also mention 'CRONOGRAFO' on their case-backs. This is pretty suspicious, as non of the models shown are chronographs! The vendor sometimes claims that they are pre-owned and prices range from $700 to $1,000.

Rolex, Breitling et la Crise Economique
2009 March 05
SIHH 2009 Review: Panerai, Cartier, and a new Brand
2009 February 01
This year at the 2009 SIHH show in Geneva, the new releases reflected the slowing down economy and humble state of the international luxury market. Although a few very expensive watches and movements were released, most models showcased a subdued, classic style and most of the new super-complicated models came from the old established brands such as Cartier and Vacheron Constantin.

Human Rights on Jewelry - DeMaria Italy Makes Socially Responsible Jewelry
2008 December 02
In the past, a lot of talk and controversy has taken place about the ethics of the jewelry industry. From the sale of diamonds that helped fund brutal military activity, to the destruction of natural habitats in order to mine precious metals and stones. Finally in the past several years, our society has started to care enough about these issues that it has actually become profitable for jewelry and watch companies to adopt more eco-friendly and socially responsible manufacturing methods.

Lets not tell time!
2008 October 31
One of the hottest things in the watch market today is the all black or Phantom type watches. There are a few companies manufacturing these models promoting the unreadability and unusual style.

Still a good time to buy a watch
2008 October 17
In these economic times of uncertainty, there are exceptional watch brands that are comparable to those of the Haute Horlogerie. There are many watch brands that are at par as far as quality and style is concerned. Watches like Hamilton which are owned by the Swatch group, who also own the movements that are supplied to watch manufacturers around the world.

Strap Field Test - How water affects watch straps
2008 September 25
This summer I had the chance to stage field studies on how different types of watch bands fare in water. You may own a water resistant watch, but if you don't have the right kind of strap on it you don't want to get it wet.
Are you buying from an Authorized dealer
2008 September 25
Internet sales are definitely on the rise. If you Google a watch company, you will get pages of sites offering watches. Here's a little lesson in online shopping.
Nicolas G. Hayek, the man who saved the Swiss Watch Industry
2008 September 18
During the 1970s the watch industry was turned on its head with the advent of inexpensive, production line, watch manufacturing that mainly took place in Japan. Swiss watchmakers were affected strongly by the new Japanese market and a crisis ensued. While old independent companies like Rolex and Patek Philippe where not in direct competition with the Japanese giants, two of the world's major watch manufacturers, USUAG and SSIH could not cope with the competition. In 1982, the two companies' creditors hired Hayek Engineering in an attempt to save the giants from bankruptcy. The work that Nicolas Hayek did during this time secured him his spot in watch making history and has often been credited with saving the entire Swiss watch industry.
Mainstream is on its way out!
2008 September 13
As the high-end market continues to flourish in these economic hard times, the watch trend is really going towards people wanting to wear something no one else has. The days of wearing a Rolex has been termed as a Texas Timex. In the past it seemed like as soon as you made a little success for yourself, one of the first thing you did is go out and get a Rolex. Although Rolex, Breitling and Cartier will always own a huge chunk of the market, Bell & Ross, Corum, U-Boat are creeping up and becoming in demand.
In-House Movements A Must? Nicolas Hayek Sends Wakeup Call to Swiss Watch Industry
2008 August 26
In 2004 the Swiss Competition Committee (Comco) vetoed ETA SA's decision to reduce their supply of movements to watch manufacturers outside of the Swatch Group (ETA's parent company). ETA intended to discontinue their supply of ebauches in 2006. Ebauches are unassembled, blank movements that companies like IWC, Panerai, and Breitling modify and finish to fit their watches. These modified mechanisms are named with proprietary calibers like the Breitling caliber 13, which started its life as an ETA Valjoux 7750.
Collaboration speciale: les bracelets cuirs
2008 August 21
What to do when water gets in your watch!
2008 August 20
Sometimes we get a little careless, especially when we're on vacation and everything is relaxed. On a nice hot sunny day, you decide to go for a refreshing swim, but you forget to check that your screw down crown is not properly screwed in. You do a couple laps, you notice that the timepiece is all fogged up, or has water inside the case.
Beware! The real truth about purchasing a watch outside of Canada
2008 August 14
I know you've been tempted seeing a watch in the islands or at duty free shops. What a great deal, I'll just put it on, and tell customs it's my watch if asked. The reality is, it is a criminal offense to not declare any luxury goods over $2,000.00.
How to buy a watch
2008 July 28
Being a watch salesman, we go through all sorts of people with their questions and opinions on what sort of watch to buy. There are a lot of factors involved, and it's very hard to tell you what to buy. Whether it is an investment grade piece, or just something that you saw in a magazine or on some celebrity's wrist. Choosing a Brand or Model can and should be a fun experience.
Why a pre-owned watch is not used
2008 July 02
There is a large market for pre-owned or used watches. Some people think of a used watch as something that is dirty or has bad Karma. While this could be hard psychologically for some people, and would be impossible to sway, a pre-owned watch could be a great way to get that watch that you find unreachable financially. Sure someone owned it before you, but a pre-owned watch sold from a reputable dealer whom you can trust, usually goes through a process of making it new again, and offer a warranty just like buying a new piece.

2008 June 20

Titanic DNA Romain Jerome unaccessable as the ruins itself
2008 June 15
These exquisite time pieces are probably the hardest watches to try and purchase. The craftsmanship and pure beauty of these pieces in person are exceptional. If you ever get a chance to see one of these pieces, take the time to see the detail and feel the substantial craftsmanship. Production this year will be around 700 pieces.
Review: Roger Dubuis Easy Diver S.A.W 46mm
2008 June 06
What Roger Dubuis has done in its relatively young existence, is to position itself amongst the industry's oldest, most luxurious, and best known manufacturers. Since the company was founded in 1995, it has been braking the mold that companies like Patek Philippe had implanted for super-high end watches. Roger Dubuis founder Carlos Dias' fixation with quality, functionality, and style is well represented by the S.A.W (Sport Activity Watch) collection.

2008 May 30
A collector with dozens or hundreds of high-end watches wants to keep all the pieces optimally wound, because many will not be worn for days to months at a time. They should also be displayed in a beautiful way, as the pieces themselves are tiny works of mechanical art, and are often very valuable.

Review: Azimuth Jagdbomber Military Watch
2008 March 12
There is a growing appreciation for pilot watches. My theory is that all us baby boomers are at the age where every day seems to be harder than the next to read anything. The large sizes with luminous hands and markers, make it easy on the old eyes.
Review: U-Boat Flightdeck CAB W PVD Chronograph
2008 February 28
Throughout the three years that we have had U-Boat watches, they have grown from fashion, quartz watches to well-built luxury watches with mechanical Swiss movements. Amongst the most recent models is the Flightdeck CAB W. It runs on the infamous Valjoux (ETA) caliber 7750, and is encased in a 50mm case, blackened by PVD treatment, and fitted with a sapphire crystal.

Unforgettable Win for the Montreal Canadiens
2008 February 20
The Montreal Canadiens Stage a Spectacular Record-Braking Comeback. Last night was by far the most exciting night of hockey that I've witnessed since Jacques Demers called Marty McSorley on an illegal stick in 1993. What I saw was our Montreal Canadiens staging a miracle comeback from a five goal deficit, at the Bell Centre, against the New York Rangers. Then, as if that was not enough, Captain Koivu beat Lundqvist in the shootout to win the game.

What About Pre-Owned Watches?
2008 February 08
It's not possible to trade-in a suit. Cars gain mileage, which continuously depreciates their resale value. Electronic devices become obsolete. A watch is one of the very few luxury items that will work just as well, and can be worth just as much when it is pre-owned as when it is new.
Water-resistance: 100m under water equals 11kg of pressure!
2008 February 07
Water-resistance means a watch is sealed against dust and water. It refers to the pressure the watch can withstand, measured in atmospheres or bars. Pressure is a force applied to a surface where 1 bar = 1 kg / sq. cm.

Changing the date engages several wheels in the mechanism. Never make a 'rapid date change' between 10pm and 2am as this is when the date-change mechanism operates.

Motor: A car engine works only when the vehicle is running. Movement: A watch movement operates 24/24, 365 days a year (thus totalling 8,760 hours).
Watch Tip of the Day

The crown is used to adjust the hours, minutes and date. Never turn the crown while wearing the watch as this could twist the winding stem and damage the movement. Always take the watch off first.
