About Bvlgari
Breathtaking jewelry pieces, scents to beguile the senses, elegant sunglasses, luxurious leather bags, and, as the crowning jewel, hotels: Anyone with a penchant for exclusivity is well served by the Italian luxury brand Bulgari's fine tradition. The brand's concept follows a distinct system within the family-owned company where president Paolo Bulgari and his brother Nicola firmly hold the reins. No idea goes into production that the two brothers have not personally consented to.
The Greek silversmith Sotirio Bulgari settled in Rome at the beginning of the last century and founded a shop called Old Curiosity Shop, named after the novel by Charles Dickens, in order to attract British and American tourists in the Eternal City. His selection of jewelry and accessories was impressive even then, and he soon opened another branch in St. Moritz. In order to continue developing and perfecting his jewelry art and the production of silver wares, he made his shop on Via Condotti in Rome the flagship store, which it has remained until today.
In the 1990s Bulgari extended its product portfolio to include perfumes and accessories, supporting its international expansion by going public and putting the holding company Bulgari S.p.A. on the stock index.
Watches were already part of the program in the 1940s, but only in the '70s did a systematic collection become apparent. The most famous example is the Bulgari-Bulgari model: Created by designer Gerald Genta in 1977, it was not only a groundbreaking success for the company, but also the first watch produced in a large series under the company's own insignia. The double logo engraved into the bezel still continues to influence the company's watch design today. Shortly thereafter the family founded Bulgari Time S.A. in Switzerland's Neuchatel. In 1993 Bulgari embarked upon a new strategy and since then has distributed its watches worldwide through a network of exclusive dealers.
The next step in the evolution followed in mid-2000, when Bulgari purchased Daniel Roth S.A. and Gerald Genta S.A., both established names in the production and manufacture of complicated and unusual watches.
In 2004 Bulgari introduced the first grande complication completely developed and manufactured within the group. The following year Bulgari took a 50 percent interest in the company Cadrans Design S.A., a Swiss manufacturer of high-quality dials, as well as a 51 percent interest in Prestige d'Or S.A., a market leader in the manufacture of stainless steel bracelets for complicated watches, thus once again underscoring the company's position within the high watchmaking sector.
