After discussing the ultra-competent, ultra-deep diving Bremont Supermarine S2000 last week, I want to dial back those Batman job parameters and look at what Robin does for a living. When taken out of Batman's shadow, you have to admit that The Boy Wonder is a pretty competent operator. He is capable of covering the Dark Knight's flanks in an ambush, answering the phones, and injecting a little levity into the working life of an otherwise dour blunt-instrument-of-Justice. Having a diver for beating around is a given in the male watch repertoire. Even if you don't need its capabilities, a diver makes a statement about the ruggedness and adventurousness of the wearer. For many, it's the only type of watch worth considering for daily wear. All deep divers are not created equal but, for our purposes, let's just call anything rated 500 metres or more, "Batman". Apart from extreme pursuits or sheer love of engineering prowess, we don't need Batman. Enter Robin.

2012 has been a year of vintage re-editions and retro designs. After several years of massive sport watches dominating the market, we are seeing a gradual increase in demand for timeless designs that just so happen to equate to the clean and simple appearance of models from the 1950s and 60s. Hamilton has been at the fore of this trend for the past several years, introducing several models that plumb the rich heritage of the (formerly) American brand. Last year we had the Thin-o-matic, this year we have the Intra-Matic, hot on the heels of the retro-sport Pan Europ chronograph.

Last year, Hamilton released the Pan Europ as a limited edition recreation of an iconic design from the 1970s. Produced in a run of 1971 examples with a blue dial, blue bezel and brown rallye strap, the model sold out in short order. It was one of the hottest Hamilton models of recent memory, and for good reason – it looked amazing, was priced really well, and had a distinctive style that set it apart from typical automatic chronographs. This year Hamilton is following up on the success of the initial run by producing two “unlimited” (regular production) versions of the Pan Europ. Available with either black and silver dials, these new Pan Europs are just as stunning as the original.

It's a watch, and a (sort of) marine chronometer - the new Hamilton Khaki Navy Pioneer limited edition celebrates the 120th anniversary of Hamilton with a convertible wristwatch that can be used as a desk clock.

Hamilton has long been a Matt Baily favourite here in Montreal, offering superb value for reasonable money. Hamiltons have elegant designs, are well built, nicely finished, and offer exceptional bang for buck compared to most Swiss brands. The latest Jazzmaster chronograph continues the tradition, while offering a subtle evolutionary upgrade of the existing series.

Not too long ago I wrote an FAQ on watches and watch technology for the benefit of our readers and clients... In the spirit of my original FAQ I have decided to begin a series of in-depth blogs on specific subjects – different complications and their variations, the engineering and mechanical work involved in a movement, how a watch is serviced, and other topics for people who wish to learn more about luxury watches.

As I’ve mentioned in the blog before, we are seeing a return to classic and simple designs in the luxury watch industry after years of huge and bold sporty watches... A perfect example of this trend is the new Hamilton Thin-o-Matic, an updated re-edition of a classic dress watch from Hamilton’s golden age.

Summer time offers us warm weather and a plethora of activities. This Baily Blog post lists five of the best summer watches available at the Matt Baily boutique in Montreal QC, Canada.

During Marco's visit to Hamilton headquarters in Biel/Bienne, he was able to film the watches in a full 1080p HD. In this Baily Blog entry, we present the limited edition X-Landing.

Nicholas G. Hayek was often referred to as the man who saved the Swiss watch industry. By consolidating some of the most important brands and founding Swatch to marry mass production with Swiss quality manufacturing he thwarted the negative effects that the advent of inexpensive, Japanese quartz watches were having on the Swiss manufacturers. Mr. Hayek was 82 on June 28th, when he died suddenly. His larger-than-life personality and hands-on business attitude will surely be missed by his colleagues.

Now that Hamilton watches are established in the high grade, entry price level, automatic watch category, the company is committed to offering the same value to women. To start, Hamilton has released several beautiful, automatic-winding, mid-sized watches this year. The JazzMaster Medium 34 is the most elegant model of the bunch. It displays an understated, clean style.

It would be pretty safe to say that all watches look better in real life than in pictures. The Jazzmaster Slim 43mm is as good an example as you can ask for. It also embodies what we are trying to achieve with the product videos on MattBaily.ca. In photographs, the Slim Small Seconds seems classic and simple, and that ends there. The dial is understated and the case is but a round fitted with a leather strap. This all changes once you have the piece in your hands. The more time is spent with the Slim 43mm the more one appreciates its elegant balanced design and incredible value.

During my visit to the headquarters of Hamilton Watches, there were several new models that really impressed me. Two amongst these are for women. The RailRoad 38mm, which I will be posting a video of as we get closer to its release date, was one. The other was the Jazzmaster Seaview Medium that I will be presenting on this Baily Blog post.

Hamilton watches have a lot of history making watches for the military and specifically for pilots, so the release of the Khaki Pilot was not a huge surprise. There are certain styles that have become so classic and so embedded in our perception of what a watch should look like, that it is hard for companies to ignore them. The "Big Pilot" is one of these styles. Hamilton has taken this style and infused many of their trademark features into it, notably great value, and a clean design that bridges the gap between vintage and new, and between sporty and elegant.

Not surprisingly, Switzerland is full of legendary watch places. Geneva houses many of the best known brands, La Chaux-de-Fonds is home to several others including the the Musée International d'Horlogerie, Vallée de Joux is an other municipality with important manufactures. Biel/Bienne, a city peppered with huge names such as Rolex and Omega, is where I was off to for a visit to the Hamilton headquarters and get a closer look at their new watches for 2010.

A continued collaboration between Harrison Ford and Hamilton has produced a new collection of environmentally aware timepieces. The Khaki Team Earth collection, based on a classic aviator style is meant to raise awareness for Conservation International, an organization who strives to empower communities to protect biodiversity and the environment.

"An American Brand." Hamilton's moniker is derived from their origin as an important watch manufacturer in the United States, but also stipulates the look and feel of their timepieces. A classic, retro design is common amongst Hamilton watches and reflects the company's strength in the fifties and sixties, when Hamilton was a household name. Highlighting this distinct personality over the past few years has helped the brand return to notoriety, but this time all over the world. At Baselworld 2010, the new models that were displayed at the Hamilton booth varied considerably in style. Some round, some asymmetrical, some even digital. All, however, portray an authentic and clear connection to some aspect of the brand's storied past.

It is undeniable that the leader in mechanical watchmaking is Switzerland. Very few other countries - namely Germany and Japan - are even on the map as manufacturers of quality movements. It is therefore the obvious choice for the Swatch Group to set up the Hamilton manufacturing operations in Switzerland. This question did bring to mind a blog entry I posted on the Baily Blog that discusses Canadian watchmaking, where I mention that it would be great to see manufactures establish themselves in Canada.

The Hamilton Khaki X-series of watches have offered an array of sporty, sizable watches with functional bezel systems and well-worked, impressive straps. The popular watch-geek destination www.timezone.com has reported a new addition to the Khaki X-watches that we should be introduced to in a few weeks by Hamilton themselves - the limited edition Khaki X-Landing.

What kind of "American Brand" would Hamilton be if it did not obsess with aeroplanes and speed? The company has an entire family of watches that are dedicated to flight, containing some popular models like the X-Wind and X-Copter. The newest addition to the Aviation family of watches is the X-Mach; able to calculate your Mach number (how fast you are going relevant to the speed of sound). I would love to hear stories of individuals putting this function to the test in real life while I will be content to measure what Mach number I am able to reach on my flight simulator.

For over five years, Matt Baily has set itself apart from other watch stores in Montreal by bringing in exciting, new, up-and-coming brands. When looking at a possible new brand to carry, quality is the first prerequisite and is followed by value and potential. This is how we took up dealership of brands like Bell & Ross and U-Boat for which we were the first dealers in Canada. With this list, we highlight five watches from our collections that have swayed trends and turned the most heads.

I've only begun watching the show recently, but I gather that Mad Men is set in the business world of the sixties, when care free behaviour was at its prime. Smoking and drinking at the office was commonplace and the marketing industry was booming and taking shape. During this era the American watch industry was also in good shape with Hamilton as a key player. In the show's fifth episode of this season a Hamilton Electric makes a quick appearance.

In the October Issue of O Magazine, Oprah Winfrey sports a Hamilton Khaky Navy GMT. The model that she wears is The gold-tone version with the white dial and white rubber strap. According to Hamilton, the talk-show legend chose the watch to wear during the cover shoot, but loved it so much that she decided to buy it after the shoot. She is seen wearing it throughout the issue along side (amongst others) Jay-Z, who is as always wearing an Audemars Piguet.

Presented at the Baselworld fair earlier on this year, the Ventura Elvis Anniversary collections celebrate Elvis Presley's upcoming 75th birthday on January 8 of 2010. Two varieties will make up the collection. The first will replicate the original Ventura model that Elvis wore during the shooting of Blue Hawaii, while the second revives the futuristic and innovative spirit of the original model.

The Perfect Watch For First-Time Buyers and Long-time Aficionados Alike The Hamilton Jazzmaster Slim collection hit the shelves about three months ago and has only received positive comments from our clients. This is for good reason. As you handle the watch and try it on it is evident that the Slim captures today's watch trends perfectly. This is thanks to its tasteful, clean design, its contemporary 43mm width, a low profile, and amazing value.

Hamilton's new Khaki BASE Jump watch was released in April at the 2009 Baselworld fair. It will soon be available at the Matt Baily boutique. I had the chance to look at one at the store before I left for Switzerland. Here are some notes.

Here's a sneak peak from Hamilton at Basel. New diver models keeping with the very popular Below Zero line. Although we don't have model numbers or even names of these new pieces, pictures are worth a 1000 meter words. Enjoy!

One of the hottest things in the watch market today is the all black or Phantom type watches. There are a few companies manufacturing these models promoting the unreadability and unusual style.

In these economic times of uncertainty, there are exceptional watch brands that are comparable to those of the Haute Horlogerie. There are many watch brands that are at par as far as quality and style is concerned. Watches like Hamilton which are owned by the Swatch group, who also own the movements that are supplied to watch manufacturers around the world.
