The Bell & Ross BR 03-92 Military Ceramic is the culmination of the company's love for ceramic materials. It is the ceramic watch that best embodies the Bell & Ross design and manufacturing principles. In a video taken at Bell & Ross headquarters in Paris, the manufacturer's head of communications shows us this magnificent piece in details

Not every watch manufacturer makes their watches from the ground-up. Many of the best known Swiss companies purchase ébauches, which are blank or unfinished, high-grade movements produced by third-party companies such as Sellita or E.T.A. Once a brand is able to create their own, in-house mechanisms, it enters a select circle of companies dubbed the Manufactures. A manufacture is able to control the quality and look of their watch mechanisms. This often leads to the creation of amazingly finished spectacles of horology in as the manufacturer attempts to distinguish them from the more common third party ébauches. Frédérique Constant is a remarkable case, because few companies serving the entry-price level luxury market have ventured into manufacture territory. In 2004 the company released an in-house movement with a skeletonized components allowing a clear view of the beating balance assembly, and giving it the name Heart Beat. Since then the Heart Beat has evolved into four distinct calibres including the automatic-winding moon phase version that is featured in the video below.

Perhaps the most popular Bell & Ross watch last year was the BR 03-92 Phantom. To follow up that success, the company released the chronograph version of the 42mm Phantom this year. The name derives from the fact that these watches are theoretically invisible. All the elements including the hour markers and hands are jet black. If it were not for the slight relief and difference in textures of the components of the face, the time would be illegible during the day. Once the shock caused by the odd dial wears off, however, the time is rather clear. In the dark a bright contrast is offered by the highly luminescent markers, which glow with a strong, dark green light. This monochromatic style was developed by Bell & Ross as an homage to military stealth, but ironically works very well at attracting the gaze of curious watch enthusiasts.

Bell & Ross created a very strong buzz at Baselworld 2010 in March thanks to the multitude of great, new watches that they released. Amongst these are two BR 03, 42mm square Instruments based on the Heritage style that was introduced the year before. I wrote about the BR 03 Heritage models in a previous post on the Baily Blog, so I will not go into details here. A simple three-hand and a chronograph version are offered. Both are showcased in the video below.

During a visit to Paris two weeks ago I was lucky to be invited to visit Bell & Ross at their communication offices in the storied centre of the city. Mr. Roberto Passariello and Ms. Axelle Rogan were very welcoming and showed me the new models in full detail. I filmed the meeting and will be posting the watch presentations of individual Bell & Ross watches in the coming days.

What makes a watch successful? Sometimes it is advertising, sometimes it is the brand name, but sometimes it is because the watch is a great timepiece and offers great value. The Alpina Extreme Diver models have made many watch buyers very happy since their release a little over a year ago. Despite being amongst the most expensive, non-manufacture models in the collection, you are getting a lot of quality and style for the money. Early in 2010 several new variations have been added in the collection. I was invited to play with them at Alpina headquarters in Geneva, where I shot a video review for MattBaily.ca.

The Club Automatic is the first of the watches to be presented. I introduced the Club Collections in a previous post on the Baily Blog. It essentially represents Alpina's take on elegant styles. It does not veer too far away from the company's distinctive character and the watches are far from plain or traditional. In the following video you will see three versions of the three-hand Club Automatic and how it looks on the wrist. Make sure you watch it in 1080p HD to enjoy these fine pieces in all detail.

Now that Hamilton watches are established in the high grade, entry price level, automatic watch category, the company is committed to offering the same value to women. To start, Hamilton has released several beautiful, automatic-winding, mid-sized watches this year. The JazzMaster Medium 34 is the most elegant model of the bunch. It displays an understated, clean style.

It would be pretty safe to say that all watches look better in real life than in pictures. The Jazzmaster Slim 43mm is as good an example as you can ask for. It also embodies what we are trying to achieve with the product videos on MattBaily.ca. In photographs, the Slim Small Seconds seems classic and simple, and that ends there. The dial is understated and the case is but a round fitted with a leather strap. This all changes once you have the piece in your hands. The more time is spent with the Slim 43mm the more one appreciates its elegant balanced design and incredible value.

During my visit to the headquarters of Hamilton Watches, there were several new models that really impressed me. Two amongst these are for women. The RailRoad 38mm, which I will be posting a video of as we get closer to its release date, was one. The other was the Jazzmaster Seaview Medium that I will be presenting on this Baily Blog post.

Hamilton watches have a lot of history making watches for the military and specifically for pilots, so the release of the Khaki Pilot was not a huge surprise. There are certain styles that have become so classic and so embedded in our perception of what a watch should look like, that it is hard for companies to ignore them. The "Big Pilot" is one of these styles. Hamilton has taken this style and infused many of their trademark features into it, notably great value, and a clean design that bridges the gap between vintage and new, and between sporty and elegant.

Not surprisingly, Switzerland is full of legendary watch places. Geneva houses many of the best known brands, La Chaux-de-Fonds is home to several others including the the Musée International d'Horlogerie, Vallée de Joux is an other municipality with important manufactures. Biel/Bienne, a city peppered with huge names such as Rolex and Omega, is where I was off to for a visit to the Hamilton headquarters and get a closer look at their new watches for 2010.

As part of our series of videos taken at the U-Boat booth at Baselworld 2010 Matt Baily presents the U-Boat U-1001/1. This 55mm, titanium, Italo Fontana creation is robust. These pieces are equipped with structural strength suited for professional, deep sea dives, but demarcated with signature U-Boat style rather than technical graduations and markings.

The 12 Hours of Sebring GMT Chronograph was released this year by Alpina watches at the Baselworld 2010 fair. Its striking, luxurious, and sleek style has attracted quite a bit of attention. You can read the article I wrote about this watch on the Baily Blog titled "Alpina Official Timekeeper 12 Hours of Sebring 2010 Limited Edition." I liked the Sebring GMT Chrono when I saw it on pictures, but once I actually got to play with it at the show I fell in love with it. Its only downside is that Alpina will only manufacture 158 of them, but I guess that this is good for those who manage to get one!

As I mentioned already on several occasions, Italo Fontana did not disappoint this year at Baselworld. Several very exciting U-Boat watches models where revealed. Amongst them were three new versions of the Classico Titanium Chronograph, which was released last year in a limited series of 200. These 53mm wide, 17mm thick, titanium marvels are equipped with ceramic bezels and fantastic race-car-dashboard-like dials. Each variation will also be limited to only 200 pieces.

MattBaily.ca is producing HD videos in order to share as much of Baselworld 2010 as possible with our clients and fans. I have been finally been able to edit the first two HD videos. These pertain to the two awesome U-Boat watches that where revealed this year. The first is the Flightdeck Ceramic Bezel featuring - as you may have guessed - a black ceramic bezel and a sleek carbon fiber dial. The second is the exciting U-42 limited edition that I have been talking about in this and this recent posts. The beauty of the U-42 is that it offers many of the features from the impressive case of last year's ultra limited U-1942 - albeit in a smaller 53mm package - but at a fraction of the price. It is definitely worth taking a look at.
