New U-Boat U-42 Chronograph and 47mm Limited Editions

Last year U-Boat came out with the U-42 limited edition series, a 53mm titanium monster based on a diver’s watch designed in 1942 by Ilvo Fontana, grandfather of company president Italo Fontana. The U-42 was a very distinctive watch that offered a totally unique look in the U-Boat line, one that competed more with the likes of Panerai and Audemars Piguet (but for much less money). This year U-Boat has expanded the U-42 lineup to include an automatic chronograph, as well as a midsize 47mm model to suit more average wrist sizes.

A Plunge Into the World of Diver's Watches

Having written recently about the U-Boat U-1001/1, I took a brief plunge into the world of diving watches and what they offer. There are very specific requirements for a watch to be considered a diving watch. While these features are outlined in detail by international standards, the most important ones can be summarized by considering what is essential to underwater timepieces. They must function when submerged and under great pressure and allow the wearer to easily and quickly measure the elapsed time at different crucial instances during the dive.

During the past few weeks, U-Boat has been hinting at the release of a new limited edition model to at this year's Baselworld fair. It would be great to have all the details, but I guess we will have to wait to see the watch at the show one week from now. Matt and I will be in Basel where we will be able to get the full scoop on the new U-Boat watches.

U-Boat watches having enjoyed some success in the past year, are showing it with the introduction of an extremely limited super-watch that is sure to turn heads. The U-1942 will be the largest watch available on the market with a diameter of 65mm and a production of only twenty-nine pieces.
