Alpina has been on a roll lately, after introducing several cool new models (including the Startimer and Extreme Sailing, and the upcoming Heritage Pilot) that have really put the spotlight back onto the brand. The new theme seems to be better design, better quality, and lowered retail prices overall. The new Extreme Sailing Automatic in particular offers exceptional value; it’s a clean, functional and good-looking watch that appears far more expensive than it is.

In these economic times of uncertainty, there are exceptional watch brands that are comparable to those of the Haute Horlogerie. There are many watch brands that are at par as far as quality and style is concerned. Watches like Hamilton which are owned by the Swatch group, who also own the movements that are supplied to watch manufacturers around the world.

The large watch fashion trend is still going strong. It makes quite the fashion statement when you see an elegantly dressed woman or celebrity wearing a large sporty timepiece. It exudes confidence and attitude, while still being functional and incredibly easy to read.

Frederique Constant (and sister company Alpina) have a history of interesting sports sponsorships. Alpina sponsors the 12 Hours of Sebring endurance race, while Frederique Constant has been a part of the Lake Geneva Regatta for classic boats (commemorated by the Runabout series), and has also worked with the Austin Healey owners club for the Healey line. The latest limited edition from Frederique follows that same idea of a classic watch for a classic event – the Peking to Paris chronograph commemorates the legendary automobile rally between China and France.

Each of the roughly 130 companies represented showcase their most important and newest models. Every watch displays important details such as case size, movement calibre and specifications, available variations, and a good estimate of the watch's USD retail price. This summer I had the chance to stage field studies on how different types of watch bands fare in water. You may own a water resistant watch, but if you don't have the right kind of strap on it you don't want to get it wet.

In 2004 the Swiss Competition Committee (Comco) vetoed ETA SA's decision to reduce their supply of movements to watch manufacturers outside of the Swatch Group (ETA's parent company). ETA intended to discontinue their supply of ebauches in 2006. Ebauches are unassembled, blank movements that companies like IWC, Panerai, and Breitling modify and finish to fit their watches. These modified mechanisms are named with proprietary calibers like the Breitling caliber 13, which started its life as an ETA Valjoux 7750.

The Baselworld fair has come to an end. Hundreds of thousands of industry experts and watch enthusiasts have witnessed one of the world's most revered trade shows. Upon his return, Matt was very excited over all the new Bell & Ross pieces, and in awe of the new Concord C1 tourbillon. The new direction that Alpina is taking with their manufacture movement came up more then once. Matt was also impressed by several new jewelry collections that have been released by Calgaro and Pianegonda, which I will write about in my next blog.

You may have noticed that the Baily Blog has suffered a slight decrease in posts about new watches in the past little while. This is likely due to our watch companies keeping many of their new surprises under wraps; saving them for the end of the week to be released at the the world's largest watch and jewelry exhibition. Starting this Thursday, however, the Baily Blog will be showcasing many new products, as Matt and Marco will be at the show taking pictures and videos, and interviewing industry experts about the watchmaking year to come.

With this list, we highlight five watches from our collections that have swayed trends and turned the most heads.

As we have said before many times on the Baily Blog, Frederique Constant is one of the best value-for-money brands in the entry-level luxury Swiss watch category. They make finely finished watches with clean styling that look far more expensive than they actually are. Their Manufacture models are particularly noteworthy, offering a unique in-house movement produced in their own facility at an unbeatable price. Starting at just under 3000$, FC makes one of the most affordable in-house alternatives to the usual ETA/Sellita/Dubois Depraz offerings.
