  • I Have a Small Wrist

    2009 May 04

I hear these words from about 70% of the men that come into Matt Baily to try on watches. This is a misperception, as most of these men actually have an average size wrist. A few even have some pretty large wrists. Perhaps a pamphlet should be created to put wrist sizes in perspective. The only source I could find for data is from Statistics Canada, which states that the average diameter of a 19 year old man is just over 6.5 inches. I estimate that about 60% of all men's wrists that I see in the store are between 6 3/4 and 7 1/4 inches.

  • Bell & Ross Turn Coordinator FR

    2013 April 01

  • Strap Field Test - How water affects watch straps

    2008 September 25

This summer I had the chance to stage field studies on how different types of watch bands fare in water. You may own a water resistant watch, but if you don't have the right kind of strap on it you don't want to get it wet.

  • A Plunge Into the World of Diver's Watches

    2010 May 19

Having written recently about the U-Boat U-1001/1, I took a brief plunge into the world of diving watches and what they offer. There are very specific requirements for a watch to be considered a diving watch. While these features are outlined in detail by international standards, the most important ones can be summarized by considering what is essential to underwater timepieces. They must function when submerged and under great pressure and allow the wearer to easily and quickly measure the elapsed time at different crucial instances during the dive.

  • Oris BC4 Retrograde Pilot Watch

    2012 February 06

This week we here at Matt Baily received a new line of Swiss watches – Oris. Continuing our tradition of seeking out interesting small brands that offer good value for nice timepieces, we took on Oris as a way to round out our collection of cool sport watches. And the brand doesn’t disappoint – they offer a number of interesting models that are well made, good looking, and reasonably priced. One model in particular caught my eye – the BC4 Retrograde, a pilot-style watch with a cool complication that sets it apart from the crowd.

  • Boutique Pandora Chez Matt Baily

  • Matt Baily at Baselworld 2010 - March 18 to 25

    2010 March 15

You may have noticed that the Baily Blog has suffered a slight decrease in posts about new watches in the past little while. This is likely due to our watch companies keeping many of their new surprises under wraps; saving them for the end of the week to be released at the the world's largest watch and jewelry exhibition. Starting this Thursday, however, the Baily Blog will be showcasing many new products, as Matt and Marco will be at the show taking pictures and videos, and interviewing industry experts about the watchmaking year to come.

  • Corum Ti-Bridge Limited Edition - An Example of Modern Elegance

    2010 January 12

Ever since the seventies, when Gerald Genta gave the world the Audemars Piguet Royal Oak and the Patek Philippe Nautilus, less elegant watches made of non-precious metals have become accepted as luxury items. Never before as in the past decade, however, has traditional high-end horology been so intertwined with casual style. Manufacturers such as Bell & Ross, Roger Dubuis, Jaeger Lecoultre, and Corum have delighted watch enthusiasts with fantastic creations that blur the line that separates traditional elegant luxury and rugged functionality and style. Perfectly balanced between these two aspects of watchmaking is the runner up 2009 Watch of the Year, the limited edition Corum Ti-Bridge.

  • 40th Anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing

    2009 July 16

July 16th 2009 marks the 40th anniversary of the launch of Apollo 11 set to land on the moon. The trip from Earth to the Moon and back took a total of eight days, and the crew of Apollo 11 only walked on our cheesy-faced satellite for only two and a half hours, but as Edwin E. "Buzz" Aldrin stated: "In (that) one moment, the world came together in peace for all mankind."

  • Collaboration speciale: les bracelets cuirs

    2008 August 21

  • Elegant Gold Watches Are Back... Well They Never Actually Left

    2009 August 27

I have a theory that the average size of watches will not go back to the smaller diameters of five to ten years ago. Psychologically it is easier to get used to a larger watch then changing for a smaller one. For this reason we have become accustomed as a society to the current average diameter, which I estimate to be 44mm. However true my theory may or may not be, there is one category of watch that will always defy it. The elegant, gold watch has proven itself to be timeless with its recent resurgence in the catalogues of modern brands.

  • Rolex, Breitling et la Crise Economique

    2009 March 05

  • Fantastic reading material for Watch Aficionados: Wristwatch Annual 2010

    2010 February 12

Every year, many watch lovers anticipate the publication of the Wristwatch Annual. This catalogue of the most important luxury watch brands is a sort of holy scripture for collectors, enthusiasts, and watch professionals alike. Each of the roughly 130 companies represented showcase their most important and newest models. Every watch displays important details such as case size, movement calibre and specifications, available variations, and a good estimate of the watch's USD retail price. The 2010 Wrist Watch Annual continues the tradition with some added features and an immensely handy and ever-growing illustrated glossary.

  • Simple Does Not Mean Unremarkable - The Marvin Watch Co presents M108 Origin

    2010 July 02

Marvin Watch Co° may strike many in North America as a new brand, but in reality it has a very long and eventful history. Many of their vintage creations, from as far back as the early Twentieth century, are still ticking today on the wrists of collectors or at the Marvin castle in Neuchatel, Switzerland. When it became official that Matt Baily would be an authorized retailer for this fine brand, we posted an article presenting Marvin Watch Co° on the Baily Blog. The company takes great pride in their history and many Marvin watches are created to reflect this heritage. The Marvin M108, dubbed the Origin, is a perfect example of this. It captures subtle hints of vintage elegance and mixes them within a contemporary package.

  • New Rado Sintra XXL Skeleton Chronometer

    2011 December 19

The latest addition to the Matt Baily lineup is Rado, a favourite brand among fashion conscious trend-setters who want avant-garde design and high-tech materials. A pioneer in the field of composites and ceramic watch cases, Rado has made a name for itself by innovating in a traditionally conservative Swiss watch market. One of the centrepieces of the Rado collection is the Sintra, a tonneau-shaped model available in a variety of ceramic colours with an integrated bracelet. And the flagship of the Sintra collection is the new XXL Skeleton Chronometer, which showcases a beautifully skeletonized automatic movement.

  • Panerai PAM 183 Radiomir Black Seal

    2013 April 08

When someone works with watches on a daily basis, they tend to develop a list of particular watches. The watches on the list are the essentials – the best, the necessities, the icons. They are the watches that every watch lover should own at some point in their lifetime. It’s the desert-island list for watch nuts. My list includes a spot for the Panerai Historic Collection Radiomir – a watch that, in my opinion, is one of the finest designs of the 20th century. It represents all the qualities I look for in a watch – a rich brand and model history, an iconic design, harmonious proportions, and fine finishing. And of course it looks and feels fantastic on the wrist.
